Senator urges taxpayers to collect unclaimed refunds

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer is urging North Country residents to collect unclaimed tax refunds that will vanish later this month.

Schumer says some 27,000 upstate New Yorkers are owed about $34 million in unclaimed tax refunds that will be retained by Washington unless they are claimed by April 18.

According to Schumer, individuals who did not file a tax return in 2007 must file and claim their refund "before it's too late."

"I want to make sure that all upstate New Yorkers get every penny they're owed come tax day," he said in a news release.

In the North Country alone, about 1,700 individuals are eligible for more than $2 million in 2007 tax refunds, Schumer says.

Taxpayers can find more information on how to file 2007 returns at www.schumer.senate.gov.

The deadline for filing federal taxes is April 15.
