Newcomb Volunteer Fire Department introduces snowbulance

NEWCOMB-Firefighters and rescue squad members inNewcomb responded to a call beyond the reaches of their traditional ambulance last weekend. A snowmobiler was injured during an accident and was retrieved by Newcomb's new snowbulance and later transported to Glens Falls Hospital with minor injuries.

Responders towed the specialized rescue unit - called a snowbulance - behind a snowmobile, down four miles of snow-covered trails, loaded the male victim onto the bed located inside and transported him to the ambulance waiting at the trailhead. The victim road in style with battery operated lights and heat.

The snowbulance was purchased in early February with monies generated by a Fireman's Fund Insurance Grant in the amount of $8200, according to fire department treasurer Wes Miga.

With the funds, the fire department purchased the snowbulance for $5300 from Progressive Motorsports in Hudson Falls and used the remainder towards a trailer to haul it. The snowmobile was purchased previously and is owned by the town of Newcomb for trail maintenance.

"The first call went very well," Musso said. "Using it in the first few weeks of owning it proves that it will be put to good use."

With the opening of the snowmobile trail connecting Indian Lake and Newcomb this winter, snowmobile traffic has significantly increased, according to Musso, prompting the purchase of the snowbulance.

The new connector trail system, opened earlier this winter ads over 30 miles of ridable trails to the existing trail system. The new trails has more than doubles the snowmobile traffic within the town of Newcomb alone, according to Yandon.

With increased snowmobile traffic, residents of Newcomb and Indian Lake are confident that the industry will have a positive effect on the local economy, but with increased traffic, comes possible accidents.

"There was a significant need to be able to respond to possible accidents on the trails, which are miles from road access," said Musso.
