Burgher Dash to boost health in community

WARRENSBURG- Warrensburg Elementary School's annual footrace - the Burgher Dash - is not only intended to raise money for school playground development, but also to bring the school community together in a healthy activity, event organizers said this week.

Registration is now open for the event, which is to be held in May.

In 2010, the event's debut year - which featured about 90 participants - the Warrensburg Elementary School Playground Committee raised approximately $1,200. About 20 elementary students set goals to run or walk the footrace. Their parents accompanied them, and a half-dozen or so high school students ran the race as well.

School faculty members note that the race offers not only a healthy one-time event, but it challenges people to get in shape beforehand, plus carry on a habit of walking daily after the Burgher Dash.

Adopting such a routine offers an enjoyable way to boost one's metabolism, lose weight, gain energy and tone up muscles, according to lifestyle experts.

It is anticipated that this race will be held annually for a long time, to grow and become a fixture on the Warrensburg Elementary calendar for the entire community. This year's goal is to have 150 participants.

The Warrensburg Elementary School Playground committee will host its 5K Burgher Dash on Saturday May 14, with the race beginning at 9:30 a.m. Entry fee is $20 for adults, $10 for students, $5 for young children, and $45 maximum per family.

The race starts at the elementary school on James St. All student runners and walkers will receive a participation award. Cotton T-shirts will be presented to the first 125 participants. Competition awards are given to the top three finishers, male and female.

Registration forms are available at www.active.com. Mail registration forms to Warrensburg Elementary School Playground Fund, 1 James St., Warrensburg NY 12885. In the event of a no-show, refunds aren't granted. Proceeds are donations to the school's playground fund. For details, contact Anne Downes at 623-9747 or: downesa@wcsd.org.
