Student arrested following van theft in Lake Placid

A student at Mountain Lake Academy was taken into custody over the weekend after allegedly stealing a vehicle and fleeing from police.

Ray Brook-based state police arrested the 15-year-old male from Lake Placid at 2:04 p.m. Sunday.

Investigators say the subject, whose name has been withheld due to potential youthful offender status, stole a van from the parking lot at Mountain Lake Academy in the town of North Elba.

The incident was reported to state troopers at approximately 4:30 a.m. Sunday. The student was eventually apprehended several hours later.

The youth has been charged with one count each of the following: third-degree criminal mischief for stealing property worth more than $250, a class-E felony; fourth-degree grand larceny for stealing a motor vehicle worth more than $100, a class-E felony; and third-degree escape, a class-A misdemeanor.

The subject was processed at the police barracks in the Essex County town of Lewis and later arraigned in Elizabethtown Town Court.

Police say the investigation is considered ongoing and no further information was immediately available.
