Champlain Valley BPW seeks new Young Careerist honoree

PLATTSBURGH - The Champlain Valley Business and Professional Women's Club is accepting applications for participation in the 2011 Virginia Allan Young Careerist Program.

Each year, the organization recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments of young professionals through the program, providing "an opportunity for encouragement, support and recognition of women and men in the early stages of their careers."

The program, which is open to women and men ages 21-35, invites potential honorees to submit applications and prepare four-minute speeches based on a list of provided subjects. The applications are then reviewed by a committee before applicants present their speeches in front of the panel of judges.

The Younger Careerist Program is named for Virginia Allan, past president of Business and Professional Women/USA, the national organization which oversees chapters like the Champlain Valley BPW. Allan initiated the program in 1964 as a way to create a mutually beneficial partnership between young working adults and BPW.

The Champlain Valley BPW is accepting applications until this Monday, April 11. The competition - in which applicants will present their speeches - will take place Tuesday, April 26, at West Side Ballroom, 253 New York Road, beginning at 5:30 p.m. A certificate, pin and one-year BPW membership or U.S. savings bond will be awarded to the new Virginia Allan Young Careerist - as well as the opportunity to proceed to the state and regional level competitions.

Applications and more information, including topics of this year's speeches and criteria that must be met, may be obtained from Young Careerist committee members Carina Parrow, cparrow@bhsn.org; Julie Kramer, 561-8383, ext. 104, or juliek@nineplatt.com; Vicki Marking, 324-4122 or vmarking@primelink1.com; or Faith Osborne Long, 564-3615 or long9194@plattsburgh.edu.
