The town of Tupper Lake auctioned off two acres of municipal land in December, thinking it would net a clean $21,600 on the deal.
But a deed search on the vacant land located on North Little Wolf Road revealed that the town only owns one acre of the land it sold. The other acre belongs to the village.
The deal got even more complicated when the purchaser, Michael and Kathy Keniston, discovered that the village has been taxing another parcel their family owns that is not actually inside the village.
The Kenistons have asked the village to sign off on the land sale and waive its claim on its portion of the proceeds. In exchange, the Kenistons say they'll forgive all 16 years of back taxes that they claim the village owes them.
Micky Desmarais said Wednesday that the property, while clearly located outside the village, has been receiving village services like water and garbage removal.
The town's attorney said the deal is ready to go as soon as the village signs off on it, but village officials say they need more time to review the transaction before making a decision.
