Founded in 1974 by pianist Eugene List and violinist Carroll Glenn, the Manchester Music Festival Inc. went beyond the boundaries of its chamber music roots and established a chamber orchestra in 1985. The orchestra was created especially to tour with Eugene List on the grand occasion of the 50th anniversary of his American Premiere of Shostakovich's first piano concerto. That premiere performance was given by the Philadelphia Orchestra at Carnegie Hall, with Leopold Stowkowski conducting. This year marks 75 years since Eugene's American premiere in 1935, and they will again perform the work on this concert tour to honor the occasion and him.

The Manchester Chamber Orchestra gave its first-ever concert in the year of its founding; at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. In the years that have followed, the MMF's mission - which places equal emphasis on performing and music education - has been strengthened by the orchestra.

The Manchester Chamber Orchestra exists today to employ gifted students who have come through the MMF's summer chamber music study program, giving them "on the job" training. The MMF mission is also to increase awareness of the MMF and Vermont's vibrant cultural scene by acting as a touring "ambassador," providing schoolchildren, free of charge, the rare experience of hearing and interacting with a live orchestra of high quality. This concert is made possible in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts.
