Ti street art to be auctioned

TICONDEROGA - After standing guard throughout Ticonderoga most of the summer, the community's "soldiers" have a final duty.

The 30 six-foot tall wooden soldiers, a street art project sponsored by the Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership, will be auctioned Thursday, Sept. 30.

The event, which will benefit the efforts to revitalize downtown Ti, will be held 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Adam's Rib restaurant.

"Many of the figures depict artist renditions of the area's early soldiers, while others include a Rogers' Ranger, golfer, fisherman and Scotsmen," said Sue Rathbun, project coordinator. "Some contain wonderful paintings of Ticonderoga's historic buildings, sites or themes related to the lakes.

"From more authentic to whimsical and fun, all the figures are unique works of art that have attracted much attention and very positive comments," she added. "We've had artists of all ages and skill levels volunteer to help and it's been such fun to see the final results."

Rathbun pointed out the soldiers were painted by wide variety of community members - students, senior citizens, professional artists and others.

The Sept. 30 events will include a cash bar, complimentary appetizers and music donated by Nelson Shapiro, a professional musician and Ticonderoga High School music teacher. The auction will be conducted by Rick Harker, professional auctioneer and owner of Mountain Time Furniture on Montcalm Street in downtown Ticonderoga.

"And there's more," said Rathbun, the TMSP chairwoman. "We have another work of art to add to our auction."

Rathbun reported that professional photographer Richard Timberlake, who lives in New Jersey but has a summer home on Lake George, has donated a 24x36-inch canvas wrapped print of any of his artwork now on display in the lobby of the Best Western Hotel to be included in the auction. The highest bidder may make the selection of his or her choice.
