Student essay contest planned

TICONDEROGA - The National Elks Association is again sponsoring an essay contest for students in grades 5-8 this fall.

The Ticonderoga Elks Lodge #1494 will visit all local schools to explain the project to students in grades 5-8. Participating schools include Ticonderoga, St. Mary's, Putnam, Crown Point, Moriah, Schroon Lake and Mountainside Academy.

This year's topic is "Why I am Proud to be an American?"

Winners in each category will receive a gift certificate and at state level a $100 savings bond and up to an additional $1,000 for national finals winners.

All eligible contestants are invited to submit a typed or legibly printed essay of up to 250 words to the Ticonderoga Elks Lodge #1494, 5 Tower Avenue, Ticonderoga 12883 by Dec. 4. A cover sheet providing the author's name, age, grade, school, teacher and parent contact information must be attached to each entry. Judging will be based on originality, theme, mechanics and neatness.

For more information contact Mary-Lloyd Burroughs at 585-7277 or Richard Nadeau at 585-7659.

Each of the local winners - three in grades 5 and 6, three in grades 7 and 8 - will compete in the district contest to determine who will compete in the state and national finals, after which top honors will be presented at the national Elks Convention in July 2011.
