Amerindian firm named Northlands contractor

Alutiiq was named the primary contractor for Northlands Job Corps Academy in Vergennes. For the last five years, ResCare has held the primary contract for the operations of Northlands and Alutiiq was the sub-contractor. Alutiiq is also the primary contract holder for the Flint-Genesee and Detroit Job Corps Centers

Alutiiq is owned by Afognak Native Corporation, an Alaska Native Corp. (ANC) formed under the 1971 Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act. The Afagnak people are the indigenous people of the Kodiak Island archipelago, located 225 miles south of Anchorage in the Gulf of Alaska.

The Alutiiq people have inhabited their traditional lands for over 7,500 years. AFC. represents over 700 native shareholders which are descended specifically from a village on Afognak Island.

Today, Afognak employs approximately 6,400 people in nearly every state, and several foreign countries with operations in: security, logistics/operations & maintenance, information technology, technical services and construction.

In addition to a change in contractors, Northlands has added new staff in business and community relations, outreach and admissions counseling, social development management, human resources, executive sssistance, career counseling, reading instructing, TEAP specialist, recreation, residential advising, and safety, according to Wayne Tozzi, the academy's new business and community liaison officer.
