Sailing course will begin this Monday

PLATTSBURGH - The Champlain Sail and Power Squadron, a unit of the United States Power Squadrons, the world's largest boating safety education organization, is offering "Sail 2009," an eight week course in the science and techniques of sailing beginning Monday, Sept. 20. The course, which will run from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Monday evening, will be held at the Lodge at Gander Mountain Sports in the Champlain Center Mall.

The course is a complete sail course, beginning with basic boat designs, rigging, and the science of sailing for the beginning sailor. The course then proceeds onto the physical aspects of sailing, steering and helmsmanship, handling of more difficult sailing conditions, sailing safety, navigation rules,and heavy weather sailing.

Also included are tuning the rig, spinnaker handling, docking and anchoring and marlinespike seamanship. The course will be taught by Michael Stephenson, past commander of the Champlain Sail and Power Squadron, who has had extensive sailing experience.

Although all U.S. Power Squadron instructors are volunteers and are not paid for teaching there is a charge of $55 for books and materials. To enroll in the course or for further information, call Dave Robertson, education officer of the Champlain Sail and Power Squadron at 643-9262.
