Peace event marks fourth year in Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH - In 41 countries around the world, and 41 cities in the U.S. alone, Earthdance 2010 will use the art of dance to promote peace. For the fourth year, The Red Hummingbird Foundation has brought the international event to Plattsburgh.

According to Earthdance International's Web site, www.earthdance.org, the nonprofit organization has joined "participants worldwide in a synchronized Prayer for Peace, ... enabling the growth of an international community addressing peace, sustainability and social justice through the universal language of music, art and dance."

Lindamarie Hill, president of The Red Hummingbird Foundation heard about Earthdance four years ago, and felt it was something the foundation could get behind.

"I really thought it would be something that The Red Hummingbird Foundation would find beneficial for the community and something that we could get the college kids involved in that would just be fun," said Hill.

"That is our goal in life - to create a peaceful environment," she added. "We live in an awesome community and it's filled with infinite beauty and art and poetry, and that's our life. We want to exchange that with other people."

This year's event will take place at the McDonough Monument stage, this Saturday, Sept. 18, from 7 p.m. to midnight.

"It's that principle that when you get more than one person together, it amplifies energy; amplifies the intention of what you're doing," explained Hill. "This is a prayer for peace, but it's a prayer for peace that people are doing in an environment that creates joy."

"Lots of people pray for peace, but when you're coming from a joyful place, then that really has an impact on people and on the prayer, because you're participating together," she added. "You're really feeling the love and the joy that come from being together."

For this year's event, there will be various forms of dancing, including a fire dance with Red Hummingbird member Kim LeClaire and other members of the foundation.
