Backwoods Pondfest returning for fourth year

PERU - Does music get played in the woods? You bet it does.

The sounds of nature will soon be accompanied by guitar, drums and many other instruments as Backwoods Pondfest returns to the Twin Ponds Campground in Peru Friday, Sept. 10, and Saturday, Sept. 11.

Katie Bazzano, one of the main organizers for the event, said she's excited for this year's line-up, which features a mix of local, national and international bands.

"We now have a wide variety of music, from hip-hop to funk to bluegrass to reggae," said Bazzano. "There is a band for every style."

This year's festival will open with a performance by Shameless Strangers Friday afternoon. Bands to follow that day include Sinecure, Roots of Creation, Lucid, Twiddle, John Brown's Body and Brother Past. The music will pick back up Saturday afternoon with Capital Zen, followed by the Tim Herron Corporation, Blues for Breakfast, Hot Day at the Zoo, Bearquarium, Spiritual Rez, Garaj Mahal, and Jurassic 5's Chali 2na with House of Vibe and special guest Deploi. Lucid will return to the stage to close out the festival that night.

"Artistically, it brings a lot of great musicians together for everyone in the area to hear," said Bazzano, who admits she spends much of her time during the event overseeing things to ensure they go smoothly rather than watching the performances. "I can't wait to hopefully catch some bands. It's all about the music for me."

With last year's attendance at about 1,100 people, said Bazzano, the 26-year-old festival promoter said she hopes this year's line-up will help top that number.

"You never know with the economy but we hope to see the numbers rise," said Bazzano, who added she enjoys knowing people look forward to the event now in its fourth year. "Seeing the people's faces when they hear one of their favorite bands is priceless."
