SCHROON LAKE - The Schroon Lake girls soccer team has a lot going for it this fall.
"We have team leaders, we have skill and we have speed," Coach May Lou Shaughnessy said. "If we can put them all together we should be looking at a great soccer season."
The Wildcats return 12 players this season, including most of their statistical leaders from 2009.
Brianna DeZalia, Rebecca Armstrong, Sarah Mahler, Katelyn Rose and Lindsay Reynolds will man the forward line. All played a year ago.
Ashley Subra and Clare Whitney return at midfield. They're joined by rookies Danielle Barror, Gabe Harvey and Chloe McKenna.
Armstrong and Subra were the Wildcats top goal-scorer last season, while Brianna DeZalia and Mahler paced the club in assists.
a Veteran defense features returnees Kathaleen Gallagher, Lizz Bessey, Miranda DeZalia, Sam Thatcher and Jessica Grey.
Goaltending could well tell the story for the 1010 Wildcats. Gone is three-year starter Mindy Whitty. Vying to replace her in the nets are Bessey, Grey and Reynolds.
Coach Shaughnessy said the defense will be key in keeping pressure off an inexperienced goalie.
"This season we hope to come onto the field with determination, strength and dedication as a team," Shaughnessy said. "With a roster of 15 players, our seniors - Ashley Subra, Rebecca Armstrong, Sarah Mahler and Lizz Bessey - will prove to be our team leaders."
