Sentinel boys eye success; girls team improving

TICONDEROGA - With a strong nucleus of senior runners and a pair of returning conference all stars, the Ticonderoga boys cross country is anxious to start the 2010 season.

"Workouts have been going well so far and the kids are working hard," Coach Brian Kiely said. "We are looking to have consistent improvement throughout the year and are looking for strong leadership from our seniors."

The senior class includes Jay Berube, Josh Cook, Kevin Densmore, Pat Lonergan and Michael Barber. Berube and Cook were Champlain Valley Athletic Conference all stars last season, while Densmore showed steady improvement for the Sentinels.

Ben Karkoski and Joe LaPerle also return for Ti.

Rounding out the squad are Brandon Charboneau, Javid Nazir, Tyler Belden, Coleman Granger, Keegan Tierney and Jacob Young.

"We are confident that some of our younger runners will provide backup in the scoring for our returning athletes," Kiely said. "With 13 runners out for varsity this year we have much better depth than last year. We are hoping to be competitive in the CVAC and in the Section VII Class D race."

This marks Kiely's 35th year as a coach, the last 27 at Ticonderoga.

Sentinel girls return young team

The Ticonderoga girls cross country lacks depth this fall, but there's plenty of reason for optimism.

The Sentinels only have five runners, but all of them were scorers a year ago when Ti posted an 8-10 record.

"We have talent and we can build on what the girls did a year ago," Coach Jay Wells said. "They're in much better shape this year than they were last year. I think we can have a really good season."

The Ti harriers are junior Tabitha Taylor and sophomores Alaina Bevilacqua, Markie teRiele, Becky Barber and Hannah Herbst.

Besides their cross country experience, all of them ran on the Sentinel indoor and outdoor track teams last season.
