North Creek honors 'Remarkable Women of the Adirondacks'

NORTH CREEK - Women of the Adirondack Park and their accomplishments will be honored at Tannery Pond Community Center Friday, Sept. 10, in an evening presentation sponsored by the Johnsburg Historical Society.

Story teller Sandra Weber and folk singer Peggy Lynn will be featured in the presentation and Weber's photographs and artifacts will also be on display in the center's Widlund Gallery throughout the month of September. The exhibit will open at 6 p.m and the presentation will start and 7:30 p.m.

"The accomplishments of Adirondack women have remained unknown and unsung for too long," said Elise Widlund. "The region's history is largely defined by the masculine experience. Tales of loggers, hermits, guides, robber barons, and surveyors fill the pages of travel guides and history books. This was predictable given that writers and historians were almost exclusively men. Women tended to leave little records of their lives; thus their stories have been overlooked."

Admission to the presentation is $10 and all proceeds will benefit the Johnsburg Historical Society.

"There needs to be a female role added to the record of Adirondack history," said Weber. "There were women in this mountainous region from the early 1800s. They came from many places, backgrounds and social or economic strata, including our well known Lucia Newell Oliviere and her daughter Jeanne Roberts Foster who were Johnsburg residents in the 1900s."

Johnsburg Historical Society is also sponsoring this program of songs and stories during the day Sept. 10 at Johnsburg Central School for grades four through eight without cost to the school. This will be part of the "Johnsburg Local History Project," a joint project of Johnsburg Historical Society and the North Creek Depot Museum.

This program is made possible in part with a grant from the Rivendell Foundation and Stewart's Shops.
