MINERVA - Lady Mountaineers head coach Candice Gereau has begun her first year with the young team and is encouraged by their first few weeks. Gereau coached modified for Minerva\Newcomb for two years before moving up to varsity.
"We are young, but very determined," she said.
The Mountaineers lost international students and leading scorer Charly Egli last year as well as senior Larissa Roy and Hillary Bureau, who both held strong offensive and defensive presence on the team.
Juniors Renna Yandon, Rebecca Bolan, Calean Gould, Marlena Peters, Massena Green and Tara Galusha will be pushed to lead the team both on and off the field and contribute to most of the offensive and defensive force.
Gereau, however, is not underestimating her underclassmen.
Sophomores Shelby Hogan and Toni Dunbar are both hard workers who will put forth huge efforts this year, according to Gereau.
Gereau also pulled up three freshman from her modified squad including Gabrielle McNally, Dakota Bennett and Bridgette Mathers to round out her team.
"They always give 110 percent, know the sport and will be major assets to the team," she said.
The team has been concentrating on fundamentals and conditioning during pre-season practices and Gereau sees the girls grow in strength and as a team with each session.
"If each player does their part, we will gel and be competitive," said Gereau.
She anticipates Indian Lake/Long Lake to be their biggest competition.
"Most teams in our league are solid with good coaching," said Gereau. "But we have good athletes and we look forward to giving them a challenge," said Gereau.
