Democrat gubernatorial candidate, State Sen. Doug Racine, wants a recount in the state's Aug. 24 primary election.
At a news conference held in his hometown of Richmond, Vt., Aug. 27, Racine said he felt a recount was needed after he learned that Sen. President Pro Tem Peter Shumlin was leading by a mere 197 votes. That's close enough to justify a recount.
Racine noted that the recount would eliminate possible errors in the current close count.
A recount is bad news for Democrats because it will delay the party's gubernatorial campaign start. Vermont Republican gubernatorial candidate Lt. Gov. Brian Dubie is already off and running on the campaign trail. He gets a big jump start compared to whoever is finally declared the Democrat winner.
