Cosmos earn a win over Terriers

The Springfield High School field hockey team recently traveled to Bellows Falls and spoiled the Lady Terriers' senior day, scoring two goals early and cruising to a 4-0 shut out win over Bellows Falls in Westminster.

The Cosmos came in at 5-4-2, good for fifth place in the Division II standings, while the Lady Terriers were looking for their first win (they have one tie), however, BF dressed just 11 varsity players, a tough situation they have dealt with the entire season.

Springfield came out and dominated from the outset, immediately putting pressure on the Bellows Falls' defense with crisp passing and two early corners, one of which produced the first goal less than three minutes in on a low, point-blank shot from Sarah Trombly. "It was a really nice pass and good communication on that goal, Cosmos' coach Bindy Hawthorn said after the game.

The Lady Cosmos kept the pressure in the Terrier zone and just under seven minutes later, the Lady Cosmos made it 2-0 (21:33) when senior Morgan Johnson made a nice feed in front to sophomore Jill Rushton, who calmly planted a shot in the back of the goal.

To Bellows Falls' credit and as they have all year, coach Bethany Coursen's crew kept running hard despite not having any substitutes, with Kya Coursen and Emile Default both creating good rushes into the Cosmos zone. However, a tough Springfield defense would not allow for a shot on goal. The Cosmos created more pressure right up to intermission, creating two more corners in the final two minutes, but Terrier keeper Shea Wilkinson denied two shots to keep it a two-goal deficit at the half.

In the second half, the Springfield picked right up where they left off, penetrating the Terriers' defense with pressure until Trombly notched her second goal of the game just four minutes in, with a low hard shot that just slid inside the right post. Some four minutes later (23:59), senior Maria Stern made it 4-0.
