Black River falls in overtime

After notching a 2-0 win over the Bellows Falls Terriers earlier in the season, the Black River boys' soccer team this time fell to the Terriers, losing 2-1 in overtime on senior day in Westminster.

"It was a great win for us to end a tough season," Bellows falls head coach Larry Slason said after the match. "They played hurt most of the season and hardly any bench because of injuries, but they battled hard in every match and they certainly gained the respect of their opponents throughout the league. They were a wonderful group to coach."

After Bellows Falls got the only goal of the first half, Black River finally broke through at the 48 minute mark when senior Jake Covell made a nice pass to senior Noah Schmidt, who rifled a shot from the top of the box and inside the right post to tie the match at one.

Although both teams had chances to end it in regulation, the match went into overtime, with neither team being able to capitalize and end the deadlock. Most of the play remained in the middle of the field until the second over time began.

In the second and final overtime however, the Terriers finally came through when junior Matt Marchica took a shot with just under four minutes to end the match and give Bellows Falls a nice win to end their regular season.

"We played some pretty good soccer, but Bellows Falls was on the mark today and made the big play at the end," Black River head coach Tony Valente said after the match.

The Presidents now prepare for the Division IV state tournament which begins this week.
