Warriors crush Keene

WILLSBORO - The boys of Willsboro finished their MVAC soccer season with a convincing 8-0 win against Keene Oct. 14.

Alex Hamel's three-goal, two-assist effort led the Warriors' barrage as they kept continual pressure on Keene's defense throughout the game.

The Beavers were able to hold off Willsboro through the first 15 minutes of the first half until Hamel sent a thru-ball for Patrick Wells, who outraced defenders to score.

Dakota Sayward scored two consecutive goals in quick succession for the Warriors as he cleaned up a couple of corner kicks. Hamel and Clay Sherman each scored in the latter part of the half to put Willsboro ahead 5-0 at intermission.

"The kids played well," said Warriors head coach Andrew Lee, noting the improvement his team has showed in teamwork and passing. "It's really starting to come together as it's getting later in the season."

Willsboro gave way to its reserves for much of the second half, but still hassled the Beavers. The Warriors finished with a 22-4 shot advantage.

"All of them did their own part," said Lee of his bench players. "They all played some good minutes for us."

Sherman and Hamel combined for Willsboro's three second half goals. Sherman finished with two goals and three assists. Goalkeeper Cody Sayward had four saves for the shutout.

Keene goalkeeper Colton Venner recorded 10 saves. The Beavers also benefitted from strong play by Sam Earl, who spent most of the game at sweeper.

The win improves Willsboro's record to 10-4 overall for the season, and 6-3 in league play.

As his team prepares for sectionals, Lee said their seeding will depend largely on the degree to which their strength of schedule is considered, having faced several strong opponents in MVAC Division I.

"I just want to keep the momentum going forward and not lose our focus," said Lee. "The last two weeks, we've been showing much better team chemistry, and I look forward to seeing more team play as we go on."
