Gregory Martin appointed new mayor of village of Champlain

CHAMPLAIN - The village of Champlain has a new mayor.

In what took less than a minute to decide, trustee Gregory Martin became the village's new mayor, after former mayor Jeff Moore stepped down.

"I'm moving to Plattsburgh," explained Moore, who told the trustees Oct. 5 his plans to step down as mayor. The resignation became official Oct. 6.

A special board meeting was held Oct. 7, in which trustee Amy Gehrig nominated Martin as new mayor, with trustee Kim Trombley seconding the motion.

"Greg has been active and is very knowledgeable with how this village ran because of all the time he's been spending here," said trustee Thomas Trombley. "So, he's perfect for the job."

Kim Trombley agreed, adding Martin being retired was an advantage as well.

"We're all still working so we don't have the time during the day to devote to coming into the office and taking care of things," she said.

After learning Martin was the new mayor, Moore said any of the trustees would have been a good decision.

"Anyone on the board would have been able to do a great job," he said. "Everybody's involved and very aware of the situations. I'm very confident that Greg or any one of them would have done a great job."

As for the village, Moore is also confident the trustees and Martin will have no issues continuing on without him.

"There's a really good board here and I felt confident they can take over and everything's going to be smooth," Moore explained. "I didn't see any real problem with leaving."

"I think with Jeff's leadership we've done a lot," said Martin. "The village is in good shape. We have no major problems. I think Jeff decided it was his time, that he wanted to leave. We understand."

Martin will remain as acting mayor through the end of Moore's term in March.

Until then, Martin plans to stick with Moore's plans for the village.

"[I want to] maintain Jeff's policies," he said. "Keep the village moving forward. I think everything is pretty much in place."

As for running for mayor in March, Martin said, "We'll see how the next couple months go."

A new trustee to fill Martin's place is currently being considered amongst the trustees. They plan to have a decision made by the next board meeting, Tuesday, Nov. 2.
