Fire crews fight Middlebury condo blaze

The Middlebury Vermont Fire Department was called to a fire at Otterside Court Condominiums, in Middlebury Oct. 4. Upon arrival they encountered fire, which was isolated to the upper floor of the residence, in the center unit of a three unit complex. They were able to get control of the fire quickly with direct suppressive efforts and prevented the fire from spreading to either adjacent unit.

A request was subsequently made for assistance with determining the origin and cause of the fire. Lt Cruise of the Vermont State Police Fire Investigation Unit and Investigator Patterson of the Division of Fire Safety, responded to assist with the investigation into the cause of the fire. After a scene investigation was conducted, in conjunction with Fire Chief Rick Cole, of the Middlebury Fire Department, it has been determined the fire was accidental in nature and most likely attributed to a laptop computer on the bed in the second-floor bedroom.

The entire condo unit was affected by smoke and water damage, with the bulk of the fire damage being isolated to the second floor and a small third floor loft area. Damage is estimated at $50,000. Two cats are still missing, since the fire occurred. The only occupants displaced as a result of this fire were in the effected unit. There were no injuries as a result of this fire.
