The winters sports season is almost here, with varsity-level teams getting excited about upcoming games, meets and matches.
In the Peru Central School District, the varsity boys basketball, girls basketball, bowling, wrestling and indoor track teams have already begun practice. The Saranac Central School district will have varsity boys basketball, girls basketball, hockey, bowling, wrestling and indoor track teams.
Peru Varsity Boys Basketball Team
The varsity boys basketball team will be coached by John Clemons. The team's overall record was 16-4 last year with a 12-1 conference record.
This year's team will consist of forwards Dan Caron, Taylor Rock and Tim Remillard; centers Charles Remillard; and guards Joe Mazzella, Kyle Carter, Will Flynn, Taylor Spear, Josh Morales, Mike Holdridge, Ben Chen and Hunter Bruno.
"This year, the Indian look to conintue the success of their program with six returning players, three of which are three-year varsity players," said Clemons. "Their strength will be in the leadership of their continue play, but they continue to focus on fundamentals, hard work and teamwork. These expectations will help the Indian overcome the loss of coach Matt Berry and players Robert Duquette and Kaleb Gohlke."
Peru Varsity Girls Basketball Team
The varsity girls basketball team will be coached by Ryon O'Connell. The team's overall record was 14-6 last year with a 13-3 conference record.
This year's team will consist of forwards Emily Decker, Jessica Decker, Meg Barber, Emily Major and Danni Dayton; guards Katie Bruno, Kelly Kezar, Mary Mazzella, Raelyn Passino, Stephanie Demarais, Mary Gilbert and Sam Martin.
"We are a well-balanced team with good height and team quickness," said O'Connell. "We look to push the ball on offense and create turnovers on defense. I am looking for the entire team to contribute during each game. With so many returners we should be sound on both ends of the floor. I hope to be in title contention towards the end of January and into February."
Peru Varsity Wrestling Team
The varsity wrestling team will be coached by Gary Edwards.
The team will consist of Kyler Agoney, Tanner Phillips, Jacob Goddeau, Jordan Bushey, Arik Robinson, Shane Varin, Josh Wright, Alex Pugh, Noah Phillips, Patrick Hogan, Caleb Feazelle, Troy Seymour, Adam Stickle, Brandon Moore, Brandon Allen, Colby Way, Derrick Cumber, Luke McKee, Vincent Mangien, Nick Forget, Joe Cayea, Joe Barshow, and Zachary Collado.
