Remembering the veterans

Ceremonies were held throughout the nation last Thursday, honoring the men and women who have served and continue to serve in the Armed Forces. Veterans Day, initially known as Armistice Day, recognizes the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I, and is celebrated on "the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month." Among the ceremonies held locally was one hosted by American Legion Post 20 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 125 at the Legion post on Quarry Road in Plattsburgh. There, Commodore Thomas Vanezio of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary was the featured speaker and ceremonial wreaths were laid honoring branches of the U.S. military. Clinton Community College also hosted its annual Veterans Day remembrance ceremony, featuring remarks from people like U.S. Navy veteran Darcy D. Purick, a teacher at the college who spoke of her father, John Warner Drake, who served 30 years in the Navy.
