Adirondack harpist to perform

LAKE PLACID - St. Eustace Episcopal Church in Lake Placid will be the site of a peaceful hour during the holiday season. On Sunday, Dec. 12, at 5 p.m., Martha Gallagher, The Adirondack Harper will present A Quiet Celebration. This beautiful program is a contemplative presentation with song, scripture and spoken word.

"A Quiet Celebration is not a concert, in the traditional sense, I encourage the audience not to applaud, but just to simply listen and soak in the music and message," Gallagher said. "It is really closer to being a meditation with music and spoken word. Both the audience and myself have the opportunity to reflect peacefully upon the spiritual aspects of Christmas."

Gallagher, who is a year-round Adirondack resident as well as a nationally touring musician, annually performs as many as 45 concerts around the nation between Thanksgiving and Christmas. A number of years ago she started to feel that even though she was singing and playing holiday music every day in December, she was missing a spiritual side to her holiday season. She approached the minister of a church in her community with the idea of presenting a contemplative program based around the Christmas story, designed to be listened to in a meditative setting.

She has been performing A Quiet Celebration for almost seven years and every year the program is different. Word spread and, while she still performs this program each year in her home community of Keene, she now also performs it in many communities all over the U.S.

Gallagher has been sharing her distinctive, and richly varied music with audiences for more than 30 years. Known in the northeastern region of New York where she makes her home as The Adirondack Harper, she has performed with such luminaries as six-time Grammy winners, The Chieftains. The concert begins at 5 p.m. and is ideal for adults, teens and older children. The church is located at 2450 Main St.

Suggested donation is $10; tickets will be available at the door. For more information on the concert, call 946-2501. For more information on Martha Gallagher, visit www.adkharper.com.
