Magic show to raise funds for mission work

The Vergennes Congregational Church will host a Magic show with Lincoln's premier international magician, Tom Verner, on Sunday, Nov. 7, 3-5 p.m.; the public is invited. Church leaders have opened the event to children and adults to increase public awareness and funds for two mission projects in El Salvador.

The first mission involves a group of fourteen Vergennes church members who will travel to ElSalvador in February, 2011 to help build homes for poor families through Habitat for Humanity's Global village program. The group will travel to the capital city, San Salvador, before meeting up with a team leader for Habitat for Humanity, who will transport the group to the LaPaz region, to work for five full days near the city of Zacatecoluca.

Two years ago the Vergennes church raised funds and sent over a dozen volunteers to Guatemala under the Global village program.

The second mission, called Magicians Without Borders, has taken magic man, Tom Verner, to ElSalvador every four months for the past six years, training a group of children to become magicians (many of the children were living in a garbage dump). Verner says "becoming magicians awakened in these children dreams that the impossible is possible. Four of these children are now in college and regularly performing magic as well. The others are finishing high school, and are also teaching a second generation of magicians. Their lives have been profoundly changed".

The Vergennes Congregational Church is located at 30 South Water Street Vergennes, with parking in the rear or on the street. The magic show will begin at 3 pm, followed by questions and answers, and light refreshments and snacks. Admission to the event is free, but donations will be accepted to support travel and other costs of these two missions. For more information about the event or to make a donation, contact the Vergennes Congregational Church at 877-2435.
