Trooper downs armed man in self-defense

On the evening of Oct. 28, Vermont State Trooper Christopher Lora was on patrol in Rutland City when he conducted a motor vehicle stop at Stewart's parking lot at State and Grove streets at approximately 9 p.m.

At the time of the stop the Trooper had information that indicated a male subject that was inside this vehicle had an active arrest warrant for a probation violation in New York and was wanted by the New York authorities. The Trooper also had information prior to the stop that this subject was likely armed. At the time of the stop State Police Sgt. Eric Albright responded to the scene to assist Lora.

During the stop, this male passenger exited the vehicle and refused to obey the trooper's commands. The male subject continued to ignore the trooper's commands and drew a handgun from his waistband.

Lora discharged his duty weapon striking the subject.

Officers of the Rutland City Police Department responded to the incident and secured the scene. After the shooting occurred emergency medical services were called to the scene and determined that this subject was deceased.

Rutland County State's Attorney Marc Brierre and the Vermont Attorney General's Office were notified of this incident.

Members of the Vermont State Police Criminal Division in D Troop were called in to investigate the shooting.

Members of the Vermont State Police Crime Scene Search Team responded to process the scene and the deceased was transported to the Vermont Chief Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy which will be conducted later today.

The name of the deceased is being withheld at this time pending notification of next of kin.
