Westport 5/29

After a season of lively debate, the school budget passed last week by a healthy margin. It's hard to take that as anything other than a ringing endorsement by the community of the school board's and the superintendent's performances in coming up with a disciplined budget under exceptionally difficult circumstances.

Congratulations are in order to the board as a whole, and in particular to its president, Mrs. Alice LaRock, who was reelected unopposed to another five-year term, and whose leadership of the board has been so productive. We should also recognize the efforts of Dr. John Gallagher, our superintendent, and Mrs. Michele Friedman, our principal. Their knowledge and expertise have done much to enrich our school and our community. Thanks for working so hard for us-and for making it possible for our great teachers and staff to do their important work, too.

The folks at the Westport Library Association are currently accepting donations of books in good condition for their fabulous Annual Book Sale, which is coming up July 9-11. You can drop off your books during their regular hours, which are Tuesday & Thursday 10-6, and Saturday 9-1. No textbooks, please.

The Wadhams Volunteer Fire Company invites the public to an Open House Tuesday, June 1 at 7 p.m. to welcome their new Fire and Rescue truck to the community. It's a 1985 GMC that has recently been refurbished and updated to meet the needs of the company, and it promises to be a significant asset to our community's emergency response capability. Come check it out as you chat with Wadhams firefighters and their families.

On Sunday, June 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. Martha Swan and Vitold Arste will host the second annual Hills Are Alive celebration of local student artists at their beautiful property, 7176 Route 9N in Westport (just east of Fitzgerald Road). Funds raised this year will help support the Crown Point String Ensemble, the Shakespeare-in-the-Park Youth Program, the Champlain Valley Fencing Club, and drumming workshops for (nearly) all ages with Jo Sallins. More next week on this exciting event.
