Going one more round to remember Mike Carpenter

PLATTSBURGH - When 29-year-old Mike Carpenter died unexpectedly last May, family and friends knew a game of golf would be the best way to remember him.

On Saturday, June 26, a four-person scramble tournament, "Another 18 With Mike," will be held in remembrance of Carpenter.

"Everybody does golf tournaments," said long-time friend and event organizer Hillary Engstrom. "But, for him, it was necessary."

Carpenter, a 1998 graduate of Seton Catholic High School, was known for his love of golf. He even graduated from the United States Golf Academy in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and, at the time of his death, was an assistant professional in Ridgefield, Conn.

"We're doing it out of memory for him," Engstrom said of the event. "He was a golfer. He was fun to golf with. He was fun to party with. He was just a fun friend."

As the event is not meant to be held as a fundraiser, but a way to remember Carpenter, Engstrom said any profits raised at the event will be donated to Hospice of the North Country.

"We're not doing this to raise money," she said. "We're not out there soliciting donations or sponsorships. We just want to go out and do something."

The event, which will be held at The Barracks Golf Course, with tee times beginning at 8 a.m., was chosen with Carpenter in mind.

"The sixth hole at The Barracks, there's a tree and a memorial stone in memory of Mike," Engstrom explained. "[The Barracks] is where - when he played high school golf and lived here - he golfed."

For more information about the tournament, contact Engstrom at 726-6343 or hillary@fessetterealty.com. The cost is $30 for members of The Barracks, and $45 for non-members. There will also be a party at The Green Room with a live band and catering by Pasquales Restaurant, following the golf outing.
