CROWN POINT - Crown Point officials are working with the community's cable television provider to create a public access TV channel for the town.

"An attempt to bring a public access channel to Crown Point with Time Warner Cable is an ongoing discussion," Supervisor Bethany Kosmider said.

Crown Point has never had a public access channel, although it has recently started sharing time on the Moriah station.

"According to federal law and the contract with Time Warner, it is apparent that Crown Point has to be provided with their own channel," Kosmider said. "Ongoing discussion has netted no progress."

The supervisor noted Time Warner's cable television franchise agreement with Crown Point expires in 2013. A local public access channel will be part of any talks in extending that pact, she noted.

"Crown Point's best interest will be kept at the forefront of these negotiations," Kosmider said.

A local public access channel is a priority for Kosmider, who took office Jan. 1 with a commitment to open government.

The Crown Point board has decided to tape its meetings and air them on the cable television public access channel it shares with Moriah.

"With the Open Meetings Law and Open Town Government format, I deemed it beneficial to film the town board meetings every month," Kosmider said.

"For those who do not have cable, they can check out a copy of the meeting from the Hammond Library as you would a book and return it when you are done watching it," she said. "This is a method of keeping the people informed of what is going on in their town."

The supervisor has also created an electronic newsletter. Anyone who wants to receive the newsletter can contact Kosmider via email at crownpoint@cptelco.net.

Plans are also being made for a town website and a marketing brochure has been completed.

Kosmider said public information and participation is a priority for the town board.

The town board meets at 6 p.m. at the town hall on the second Thursday of each month.
