Theater receives $5,000 gift

RUTLAND - The Paramount Theatre recently received $5,000 from the Chittenden Bank for sponsorship of Education is Paramount Enrichment Series.

Built in 1913 by George T. Chaffee, and popularly called the Playhouse Theatre of Rutland, it is one of the finest theaters in America.

When sound films came to town, the theater embraced the "talking movie" phenomenon and was renamed the Paramount Theatre, in 1931, after a chain of cinemas operated by the Hollywood studio of the same name.

With the decline of the film industry in the 1970s, the Paramount closed its doors and sat empty and neglected for two decades.

The restoration of the downtown theater was completed in 2000; once again, the Paramount Theatre assumed its role as an arts, cultural, and educational hub. It stands as a significant and valuable community resource.
