Johnsburg takes their music on the road

JOHNSBURG - Music students at Johnsburg Central School have recently been showcasing their talent in local communities.

High school students were featured in the Central Adirondack School Music Association All-County Festival on March 5-6 at Indian Lake Central School and JCS junior, Caleb Eick was selected to participate in the New York State Summer School for the Arts Choral Studies program this summer.

All-County festivals present an opportunity for students to play new music with fellow youth musicians and be introduced to different conductors. The experience aims to create a more well-rounded musician. "JCS was proud to have so many students participate in concert band, concert choir and the jazz bands portions of the festival," said JCS music teacher, Mary Leach. "These festivals do make the students better musicians."

Eick was presented with the opportunity to conduct the combined band/choir finale as guest conductor.

His All-County accomplishments did not stop there, however, as he received an invitation to the Summer School for the Arts.

Eick, son of Kim Eick of Johnsburg, was selected from many applicants from across the state to and will attend a four-week intensive program that focuses on vocal and choral techniques.

"This is the premier summer arts program," said Leach. "It is quite an honor for Caleb to be able to attend."

The program is sponsored by the New York State Education Department and is one step toward Eick's goal of attending college in the field of musical studies.
