Johnsburg Goes to War: 1861-1865 3/13

Hewett, Miles Baker

Born March 14, 1843 in Johnsburg, son of Enock Baker Hewett and his wife Lucy (Ingalls). Enlisted on New Year's Eve 1861 in Johnsburg for three years. Served as a private in the 16th Heavy Artillery until discharged in Aug. 1863. Re-enlisted Dec. 28, 1863 for three years in Warrensburg and served as a corporal in Co. I of the 96th NY Volunteer Infantry. Wounded in the right arm and discharged Aug. 24, 1865.

Hitchcock, Norman Wilson

Born March 5, 1836 in Johnsburg, son of John Mack Hitchcock and Phebe (Morehouse). Enlisted Aug. 22, 1861 for three years as a private in the 93rd NY Volunteer Infantry. Seems to have re-enlisted at some point because he was not discharged until Sept. 18, 1865 - over four years later.

Hitchcock, Nelson

Born April 13, 1832, Norman's older brother. Enlisted March 1864 for three years as a private in Co. H, 96th NY Volunteer Infantry. Killed at the Battle of Drewry's Bluff near Petersburg, VA on May 15th - only about 60 days after he had enlisted.
