Relay for life 2010

MORRISONVILLE - The American Cancer Society's 2010 Relay for Life of Plattsburgh, NY, held June 18-19 at the Clinton County Fairgrounds, brought in an estimated 4,000 people. The goal for this year's Relay was to bring in $220,000, which ACS community executive Joan Sterling said was reached. However, donations are still being collected through August by visiting www.relayforlife.org/plattsburghny.

During this year's event, opening words were given, and sung, by The Boobie Sisters, a group of breast cancer survivors who fight cancer through laughter and awareness.

County Legislator Sara E. Rowden, D-Area 4, and a member of The Boobie Sisters, said it was nine years ago when she was diagnosed with breast cancer - just three weeks into her new position as a legislator.

Quickly the news became public knowledge through the newspaper and television.

"I was little taken back," she said. "But, I've got to tell you, that was probably the best thing that ever happened. Because the support I got from this community was unbelievable and it came from places that I had no idea it would come from."

Rowden's words of wisdom to the 325 survivors who walked the first lap of the Relay was, "Let people know what's going on. Talk to them, because you don't know where that support's going to come from."
