Altona is looking for talent

ALTONA - After a successful first year, the Altona Volunteer Fire Department is looking for more people to come out and share their talents.

Last year members of the fire department were looking to have a new type of entertainment, leading them to the Altona's Got Talent contest.

"It just happened that my son and his friend up at the school in Ellenburg ran [a Northern Adirondack Central School] Idol," explained organizer Lee Garrand, a member of the fire department. "Someone suggested doing something along that line."

Basing their idea from the hit NBC show America's Got Talent, last year brought out 15 contestants of various ages and skills.

"We had some music acts, some bands, we also had some dancers," Garrand said. "It went very well."

This year however, Garrand is hoping to see new types of talents.

"I love the singers, I love the bands, but I'm into the variety type of acts," he explained. "So, if they've got something and people don't know about it, it's a great way to get it across."

This year's event will be slightly different than last year's, as there will be two categories. One for contestants age 15 and younger, and one for contestants age 16 and older.

Auditions for Altona's Got Talent will be held at the fire department, this Sunday, June 13, beginning at 5 p.m. Only 10 people from each age group will be chosen to move on to the final round and perform during Old Home Days, Sunday, June 27, at 6:30 p.m.

Awards will be given out to first, second and third place acts, but everyone who participates will receive some kind of prize.

"It isn't just the same old singing groups and stuff like that, which are fine," Garrand said of the contest, "but we are looking for different kinds of acts throughout the North Country. There's a lot of people who have all kinds of talent, but nobody really knows about it."

For more information, contact Garrand at 593-1001.

The fire department is also looking for more sponsors who wish to donate gift certificates or cash donations for prizes.
