Vermont soldier killed in Afghanistan

Vermont U.S. Army National Guard Specialist Ryan J. Grady, age 25, of West Burke, was killed last week when a military vehicle he was operating drove over an explosive device in Afghanistan.

"Vermonters are saddened by the loss of a National Guard soldier who paid the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan," U.S, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said. "As our state and country marked Independence Day and honored the memory of all those who served our nation, our thoughts and prayers are with Specialist Grady's family and with the Vermont Guard members serving in Afghanistan."

Details about the explosion were not made public pending further investigation by the military.
