SUNY ESF reaches agreement with APA on Newcomb VIC

The two state VICs - one at Newcomb and the other at Paul Smiths - share a $500,000 annual budget. Discussions have been ongoing about whether Paul Smith's College will take over the Paul Smiths VIC.

Because the facility was given to SUNY-ESF, the operating agreement will both save the state in its annual budget and provide an affordable opportunity to SUNY-ESF, according to William F. Porter, SUNY ESF director.

He said officials at SUNY-ESF welcome the opportunity to expose their students to what the Newcomb VIC facility can bring to their environmental studies program.

"This new initiative extends the mission of the AEC, with additional educational resources for both students and visitors so they can learn about the wonders of ecology in the Adirondacks," said SUNY-ESF president Cornelius B. Murphy, Jr.

It took a partnership for the Newcomb VIC to originally come to fruition and it again took a partnership for it to continue serving the Newcomb community, according to Canon.

"We are turning over a new leaf," he said. "This is a new and exciting opportunity for the Town of Newcomb and I view it as a win-win situation for all involved."
