Johnsburg Goes to War: 1861-1865

Dalaba, William

Born Sept. 5, 1838, son of William. I believe the mother's name to have been Ester (Hume) Carey. If so Phebe Carry, who I wrote about in my book "Echoes in These Mountains" would have been young William's younger sister. Not clear which units William served with and probably enlisted in Chester. Died May 17, 1922.

Durking, Morris

Born 1836, names of parents unknown. Married to Mary E. Locke when he enlisted. Served in Co. E, 118th NYVI. Died April 3, 1888.

Galusha, Jonas

Born 1830 and listed as 31 in the Johnsburg 1860 census, son of Reuben Sr. (69 at time of 1860 census) and Hannah (Sheffield). Enlisted in Plattsburg Sept. 3, 1864 and paid an enlistment bonus of $100 in three installments. Served in Co. D, 175th NYVI. Brother to James and Silas who also served in the war and listed earlier. Died Dec. 13, 1897.

If you have any information, pictures or diaries of these men or their families, or of the Johnsburg Civil War soldiers I have listed in earlier columns, I would welcome hearing from you. I can be contacted at 251-3009 or pearsall.glenn@gmail.com.
