TDC initiative cleaning up the community

PLATTSBURGH - The Development Corporation has a brand new bag.

The TDC recently unveiled new oxo-biodegradable litter bags as part of its "We Can Make a Difference" clean-up campaign. Five thousand bags were made specially for the organization with the idea of launching a community-wide effort to help combat litter.

TDC president Ador F. Kurtz said the idea was sparked by marketing director Joanne V. Knowlton and the TDC board of directors, with the idea of putting a new spin on cleaning up an old problem - littering.

"We felt we really should do something to assist ourselves and others to help clean up the community," said Kurtz. "We all hear comments about people needing to take responsibility for things. This seemed like a positive way to kind of approach that."

In its approach, the board went with clear bags after speaking with personnel at the Clinton County Landfill and various refuse haulers in the area, said Kurtz.

"Some taxing jurisdictions and some areas are required to use clear bags," she explained.

That's not to say they had to be boring, however. Kurtz credited Knowlton for coming up with the idea for having catchy phrases on the bags like "Plattsburgh Proud," "Pick of the Litter," and "Instructions: Place Eyesores Here."

"My favorite is 'We Cannot Count on the Wind,'" said Kurtz, who added she liked the idea of memorable slogans on the bags.

In addition to each phrase, each bag also reminds community members they need to properly dispose of litter and encourages them to recycle. All bags also include the line "I care - and we can make a difference."

"It makes you smile when you're picking up litter," said Kurtz.

It was also important to the board the litter bags didn't become a problem themselves, added Kurtz, which is why the TDC went with oxo-biodegradable ones.
