Snowmobile trails receive an upgrade

LONG LAKE - The Town of Long Lake Parks, Recreation and Tourism Department recently undertook an effort to improve their local snowmobile trails with the purchase of a new groomer from Mohawk Ltd. The Pisten Bully Paana will join the grooming fleet this week. Long Lake boasts more than 70 miles of permit-free snowmobile trails that connect to trails in the Town of Newcomb, Town of Raquette Lake and the Town of Old Forge along the train tracks.

The new machine is smaller and more compact as well as the first in North America to pull a drag designated for snowmobile trail grooming. The Paana is typically used on cross country ski trails

"It has a lot of power for a little rig and the drag handles beyond expectations," said Bill Brandt of Mohawk Ltd. He is confident it will be successful at its new job.

Long Lake chose a smaller groomer in an effort to be thrifty on fuel and friendly to the environment, while meeting the highest emission standards for 2011.

"We are committed to supporting the snowmobile industry and appreciate the growing popularity and resurgence of snowmobiling for family fun," said Alexandra Verner Roalsvig, director of Parks, Recreation and Tourism in Long Lake.
