Library looks at Kashmir

BRISTOL - The One-World Library Project will host a free program about life on Dal Lake in Kashmir. This talk and slideshow by artists and New Haven residents Michael Mode and Lynn Yarrington will take place at Lawrence Memorial Library in Bristol on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m.

Mode traveled there many times and spent a year during the 1970s living on a small houseboat on Dal Lake. He developed lifelong friendships and when he and Lynn were invited to attend a local family wedding in September, 2004, they jumped at the chance to go.

Dal Lake is currently facing serious ecological threats. The lake is shrinking and water quality issues are becoming critical. Serious restoration and rehabilitation issues are being addressed by the Indian government including resettlement plans for shifting populations from the lakefront.

The Lawrence Memorial Library, which is located at 40 North St. in Bristol, has a full listing of items in the One-World Library in their online catalog, lawrencelibrary.net.
