Librarian clarifies history of sculptor's key

Bolton Free Librarian Megan Baker called this week with a clarification about the history of the David Smith key recently presented to the library.

The large brass key fashioned by internationally renowned sculptor David Smith - a Bolton resident until his death in 1965 - was recently presented to the library by Smith's daughter, Candida Smith, on behalf of the David Smith estate.

David Smith made the key for Philbert Ainsworth upon his arrival home from World War II. The key was presented to Philbert decades ago at a party held at The Hollywood, which is now Frederick's Restaurant. The key is inscribed with the phrase, "Mayor of Tic Ridge" which refers to the hill the Ainsworth's lived on. Ironically, Philbert Ainsworth was best friends with Megan Baker's father.
