Patriots clinch Division II title

CLINTONVILLE - With both teams competing for the top spot in CVAC's Division II, it was the Patriots who came out ahead against Lake Placid in girls basketball Feb. 11.

Alexis Facteau's 19 points powered AuSable Valley to a win that clinched its third consecutive division title and marked the 101st victory for head coach Roger Long.

The sophomore center shot 7-of-11 from the field on Senior Night and grabbed 18 rebounds. 14 of her 19 points came in the first half.

The Blue Bombers came to Clintonville tied with AuSable Valley for first place among Class C and D teams in the Champlain Valley Athletic Conference, having already lost once to the Patriots earlier in the season.

Lake Placid came out shooting and quickly went up 6-4 on the Patriots, but it was AuSable Valley's defense that ultimately prevailed.

"Lake Placid came out with a lot of intensity," said Long. "They played hard, but they struggled against our [full-court] press."

That led to several turnovers by Lake Placid, which in turn opened up many scoring opportunities for the Patriots. Alexis Coolidge scored 14 to go along with 11 rebounds and three blocks, and Cammey Keyser came off the bench to score seven.

"We had some chances to really get them out of the game, but we were missing some shots," Long added.

Meanwhile, the Blue Bombers also struggled with their shooting for much of the night, especially at the free throw line where they hit just 2-of-12.

AuSable Valley, in contrast, shot 7-of-8 from the line, including 5-of-5 from Facteau.

Lake Placid made a strong run in the fourth quarter led by a pair of treys from Molly Ploof, who finished with team-high 11 points. They climbed to within five before the Patriots pulled away for the win.

Danielle Balestrini grabbed 19 rebounds for the Blue Bombers and Megan Riley added 9 boards.
