State Police issue statement regarding Rutland City P.D. child porn investigation

RUTLAND - In light of the substantial public interest surrounding the search warrant identified as Warrant No. SW-55-9-09 and executed at the Rutland City Police Department on Sept. 22, 2009, the Vermont State Police provided a brief update regarding the status of the investigation:

* As stated in the affidavit of probable cause attached to the search warrant, images of child pornography were discovered on the work computer initially seized at the beginning of the investigation. As a result of a forensic exam, there is insufficient evidence to indicate that the images were knowingly and intentionally downloaded.

* Investigators have consulted with a medical expert regarding the possible age of an individual depicted in certain digital images that were seized by Vermont State Police detectives on Sept. 22, 2009. The medical expert has indicated that he cannot say that the individual depicted is under the age of 16.

* The criminal investigation in this matter being conducted by the Vermont State Police, in conjunction with the Attorney General's Office is on-going.
