Warming things up at Winterfest

INDIAN LAKE - Winterfest will return to Indian Lake for its 5th consecutive year the weekend of Feb. 12-14, highlighted by the annual jalapenos eating contest at Marty's Chili Nights on Sunday, Feb. 14.

Entries are already coming in and owner, Nancy Harding is optimistic that this year will draw a crowd.

"Attendance has gone up and down over the past five years," she said. "It's a fun thing we like to do for whoever shows up."

Participants are expected to consume as many whole pickled Jalapeno peppers as they can within one minute. The winner will win a bragging trophy and two gift certificates for dinner at Marty's Chili Nights. The runner-up will receive one dinner gift certificate and both names will be added to the restaurant's trophy.

Past winners include three-time champion, Arthur Sabourin and 2009 champion, Jamie Mitchell. The current record is 11 jalapeno peppers in one minute.

The contest kicks off at 3 p.m. and anyone wishing to participate should pre-register by calling the restaurant at 648-5832 before 2:30 on Feb. 14.

One of the premiere winter festivals in the North Country, according to Vonnie Liddle, Indian Lake events director, Winterfest has continued to grow and attract locals from the surrounding towns of Long Lake, Johnsburg, Raquette Lake and Blue Mountain Lake to events like the jalapenos eating contest and much more.

"We have something for everyone to enjoy," she said.

The festival was founded to celebrate winter in Indian Lake and encourage residents to enjoy what the season has to offer in a time of spiked cabin fever.

A complete Winterfest schedule is as follows:

Friday, Feb. 12

- Chili Dinner in the Indian Lake Central School Cafeteria from 5 -7 p.m sponsored by the Travel Club. Dinner is $6 for adults or two for $10 and kids are $3.
