Mountain Lake Services holding essay contest

PORT HENRY - March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month. In honor of this, Mountain Lake Services is sponsoring an essay contest open to all students within Essex County. In an effort to raise awareness, we ask that all essays are focused on the theme of intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The following are examples of ways to participate in this contest: Write an essay about what you think it would be like to have a disability. Write an essay about someone you know with a disability.

The contest is open to all students of Essex County in grades 3 and above. There will be three grade categories: grades 3- 5, grades 6- 8, and grades 9-12.

We encourage each student to choose their own topic, as long as the theme remains to respect the differences of all individuals, including those with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Essays should be no longer than 250 words. Judging will be completed by a diverse group of individuals from Mountain Lake Services, including individuals with disabilities.

The winners of the contest will be honored and presented with their awards in late March, 2010.

Questions can be directed to Melissa Newell, Community and Staff Relations Manager, at 546-3381 ext. 50. Please return all entries by Feb. 26 to Mountain Lake Services, c/o Melissa Newell, 10 St. Patrick's Place, Port Henry, NY 12974.

Mountain Lake Services is currently celebrating its 35th year of providing services for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities in Essex County NY. Our mission is to enrich the lives of people with developmental disabilities, their families and our communities.
