Local school community comes together

JOHNSBURG - In the wake of the devastating earthquake in Haiti, local groups have been motivated to raise funds for victims. The Johnsburg Central School (JCS) Junior National Honor Society (NHS) joined the effort with fundraising.

Along with JCS NHS advisor Jodie Seymour, members launched the Help Haiti Now Campaign.

They began their fundraising at a recent Indian Lake-Long Lake vs. Johnsburg basketball game. Spectators willingly and generously gave, according to Seymour. Students continued to raise funds from Johnsburg staff, faculty and students.

In 24 hours, the JCS NHS was able to raise $600 to aid the American Red Cross in their relief effort.

Students were motivated to help in the relief efforts in Haiti and developed a plan to raise the money with little prompt from advisors and teachers.

"They were very eager to do anything that they could to help," said Seymour. "I was very impressed with their results. In fact, I am still receiving donations to be sent."

Additional donations can be made to the American Red Cross, PO Box 4002018, Des Moines, IA 50340-2018.
