Major structure fire destroys Bloomingdale couple's home

BLOOMINGDALE - On one of the coldest nights so far this winter, a Bloomingdale couple lost their home last week following a large structure fire.

At approximately 9:30 p.m. last Friday, crews from the Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department responded to 29 Alina Way in Bloomingdale, the home of Jay and Nicole Branch.

By the time firefighters reached the home, the structure was fully-involved and flames were shooting from the building.

The department received assistance from the Saranac Lake, Lake Placid, and Paul Smiths-Gabriels fire departments; additional tanker help was requested from the Tupper Lake and Wilmington departments.

It took volunteers several hours to control the fire, but Bloomingdale Fire Chief Ricky Burch said despite their efforts, the building is being deemed a total-loss.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.

On Saturday, Scott Cook - owner of Captain Cooks on Broadway in Saranac Lake - held an all-day fundraiser to collect money for Jay and Nicole Branch, who lost most of their belongings in the blaze.

Cook says he'll leave the donation buckets out as long as necessary.
