Rivals wage defensive battle, Warriors prevail

Lake George 48,

Warrensburg 35

WARRENSBURG - Northway neighbors and historic rivals Lake George and Warrensburg waged a defensive battle in boys basketball Dec. 21, and the result underscored the intensity of the matchup: the score was far lower than typical for free-wheeling Adirondack League action.

Battling to a score of 48-35, Lake George remained unbeaten for the 2010-11 season with a solid over Warrensburg, although the Burghers didn't make it an easy accomplishment for the Warriors.

High-flying Matt McGowan, under the restraint of Warrensburg's defense, still scored 20 points to lead all players in the offensive tally.

Teammate Alex Hladik added 17 points for the Warriors - including a three-pointer - followed by Jeff Maldonado with 7, plus Aaron Chambers and Matt Stover with two each.

Ryan Belden led the Burghers with 11 points followed by Hunter Werner with eight. John Joseph and Mike Curtis contributed seven each, and Nick Monroe chipped in two.

With the win, Lake George advances to 5-0 in the Adirondack League and 7-0 overall, and Warrensburg slips to 1-3 in the league and 2-5 overall.

Lake George won the Junior Varsity game.
